Autumn Ramblings
Saturday Oct. 10, 2009 – On a sunny and colour-laden Thanksgiving – hard to imagine that for two weeks we’ve been in gales, 3 metre waves and a humbling train of storm cells complete with squall lines, thunder and lightning. The Bay decided to let us know who’s the boss – and timmy for one got the message loud and clear.
Our Storm Gathering next weekend is near full! There are still a couple of beds, some tent spots and day passes – we’ve kept the discount to encourage the last minute club. If you were imagining a really fun end to the paddling season – let us know asap, I think we can give you that – it’s one of those events where you’ll kick yourself after in the bum (a good party trick) if you made the foolish decision to not come. Right after the Stormy Gathering – 7 of us squallions are flying to the outer west coast for a trip we’ve been long dreaming of. We’ll be “wet dropped” off a coastal freighter in Nootka Sound and the plan is to paddle, camp, get wet and surf, paddle, camp, get wet and surf, dryout – then camp and paddle and surf and get wet some more. I was a guide out there in the late 70′s – back when a $300. R5 River Runner was fine to paddle and as long as you knew a bit more than the clients – you were ok. Whatever happened to that world – seemed simpler then.
