Autumn Ramblings

Published by under Uncategorized

Saturday Oct. 10, 2009 – On a sunny and colour-laden Thanksgiving – hard to imagine that for two weeks we’ve been in gales, 3 metre waves and a humbling train of storm cells complete with squall lines, thunder and lightning. The Bay decided to let us know who’s the boss – and timmy for one got the message loud and clear.

Our Storm Gathering next weekend is near full! There are still a couple of beds, some tent spots and day passes – we’ve kept the discount to encourage the last minute club. If you were imagining a really fun end to the paddling season – let us know asap, I think we can give you that – it’s one of those events where you’ll kick yourself after in the bum (a good party trick) if you made the foolish decision to not come.   Georgian Bay Storm Gathering Video 2008

Right after the Stormy Gathering – 7 of us squallions are flying to the outer west coast for a trip we’ve been long dreaming of. We’ll be “wet dropped” off a coastal freighter in Nootka Sound and the plan is to paddle, camp, get wet and surf, paddle, camp, get wet and surf, dryout – then camp and paddle and surf and get wet some more. I was a guide out there in the late 70′s – back when a $300. R5 River Runner was fine to paddle and as long as you knew a bit more than the clients – you were ok. Whatever happened to that world – seemed simpler then.
